Micropilot and Levelflex – Endress+Hauser Radar Level Measurement

Continuous level measurement using radar waves is a modern technology installed from the top of the tank to continuously measure the level of liquids or bulk solids. With the advantages of being unaffected by pressure, temperature, vapor, dust, or the properties of the medium, radar provides high accuracy and stable operation in many industrial applications.

At Endress+Hauser, there are two prominent radar device lines:

    • Free space radar (Micropilot) – suitable for various industries, from food, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, chemicals to water and wastewater.
    • Guided wave radar (Levelflex) – used for level measurement of both liquids and solids, even in conditions with turbulent surfaces, foam formation, or funnel-shaped containers.

1. Free space Radar Level Measurement – Micropilot

Measuring principle of Micropilot Radar Sensor

Micropilot operates by emitting high-frequency radar pulses through an antenna. The radar waves travel downward and reflect off the surface of the medium due to the change in the dielectric constant (εr). The time taken for the waves to travel and return (Time of Flight) is measured to determine the distance, from which the level of the substance in the tank is calculated.

Advantages of Micropilot Radar Sensor

    • Continuous level measurement for liquid and solid tanks using non-contact measurement technology.
    • Unaffected by medium properties such as density, conductivity, foam, or dust.
    • Flexible measurement range, easy setup.
    • Withstands high temperatures up to +450 °C.
    • Safe solution for harsh process conditions (pressure, vapor, corrosion).

Applications of Micropilot Radar Sensor

    • Water tanks, chemical tanks, solvent tanks, corrosive substance tanks.
    • Applications requiring high accuracy, such as level measurement in calibration tanks.

2. Guided Wave Radar Level Measurement – Levelflex

Measuring principle of Levelflex Radar Sensor

Levelflex emits high-frequency radar pulses that travel along a probe or guided wave cable. When the waves encounter the surface of the medium, a portion of the signal is reflected back due to the change in the dielectric constant. The device calculates the time of flight (the time taken for the signal to travel to the surface and back) to determine the distance from the tank top to the product surface.

Advantages of Levelflex Radar Sensor

    • Stable level measurement, unaffected by foam, surface turbulence, or funnel-shaped contours in bulk solids.
    • Level measurement for liquids and solids, even under harsh conditions.
    • Accurate interface measurement of two liquid layers.
    • Safe operation in tanks with agitators, pipes, and obstacles.

Applications of Levelflex Radar Sensor

    • Level measurement of liquids in storage tanks, silos, and tall tanks.
    • Applications for oil, liquefied gas, and corrosive chemicals.
    • Level measurement of powders and bulk solids in silos, hoppers, and storage tanks.
    • Processes with foam or turbulent flow.
