Thermal Mass Flowmeter

T-mass – Endress+Hauser Thermal Mass Flowmeter

The T-mass thermal mass flow meter from Endress+Hauser is a direct mass measurement solution for compressed air and various industrial gases, even at very low flow velocities and pressures. With high accuracy, superior sensitivity, and a design without moving parts, the T-mass provides stable and reliable measurement performance across a wide range of industries.

Measuring principle of the T-mass Thermal Mass Flowmeter

The thermal mass flow measurement principle is based on the heat transfer from a heated object to the flowing medium. The T-mass sensor is equipped with two PT100 temperature sensors:

    • One sensor measures the flow temperature to serve as a reference value.
    • The second sensor is heated and maintained at a fixed temperature difference compared to the reference sensor.

When there is no flow, the heating power is almost zero. When the fluid starts to flow, the heat from the heated sensor transfers to the flow, causing the sensor to cool down. The heat transfer rate is proportional to the flow velocity: the stronger the flow → the faster the cooling → the higher the electrical power required to maintain the temperature difference.

Therefore, the electric current that maintains the temperature difference is the direct measured value of the mass flow.

 Advantages of T-mass Flowmeter

    1. Direct mass flow measurement without the need for pressure or temperature compensation.
    2. Wide measurement range (turndown ratio up to 1000:1).
    3. High sensitivity at low flow rates.
    4. Fast response to flow fluctuations.
    5. No pressure loss.
    6. Minimal maintenance, no moving parts.

 Applications of T-mass Flowmeter

The T-mass thermal mass flow measurement technology is widely used in many industries:

  • Compressed air: measurement of consumption and distribution monitoring.
  • CO₂: process control, beverage production, refrigeration.
  • Inert gases (argon, nitrogen, rare gases) and industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen): production & distribution, production monitoring & process control.

With insertion or inline design, Proline T-mass can measure flow even in large pipes, rectangular ducts, or round pipelines, providing a flexible and efficient measurement solution
