Aquaculture Water Quality Monitoring Solution

Enhancing the Quality and Yield of Aquaculture Products

Alongside controlling input seed quality, feed quality, and feed management, water quality control is an extremely critical factor in aquaculture, particularly in shrimp farming. Water quality determines feeding efficiency, growth rate, and survival rates; however, this factor is very difficult to predict and control.

Water quality depends on the source water quality, soil quality, feeding regime, weather, technology, and pond management practices. It is assessed through various biological, chemical, and physical parameters, which require continuous monitoring for timely adjustments to protect the stock.

With traditional methods, farmers typically collect water samples only 1-2 times per day and use conventional testing methods to determine water quality. This approach often fails to promptly identify pollution or poor water quality for necessary adjustments. Substandard water quality is one of the highest-risk factors for shrimp farmers.

To address this challenge, NK Engineering has researched and developed a pond water quality monitoring system, enabling farmers to monitor their pond water 24/7 via smartphones. The system is designed based on the QCVN 02 – 19 : 2014/BNNPTNT standard, equipped with sensors for all essential water environment parameters for aquaculture:

    • Water Temperature
    • pH, Alkalinity
    • Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) at the bottom layer
    • Turbidity, Water Clarity
    • BOD, COD, TOC
    • Salinity, Salt Content (EC/TDS)
    • Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
    • Ammonia (NH₃), Nitrate (NO₃⁻) in water
    • Nitrite (NO₂⁻), Total Nitrogen
    • Total Hardness, Minerals (Mg, Ca, K)

Monitoring parameters for Aquaculture water quality

For each online monitoring station, sensors measuring these parameters output a 4-20mA signal. This signal is sent to a datalogger communication device, which is connected to a pre-configured 3G SIM card with GPRS. The datalogger then records and transmits the data online to managers and operators.

In addition to the analytical instruments for monitoring parameters, we also provide a control electrical cabinet and a sampling system, including:

  • Control Electrical Cabinet

  • 304 Stainless Steel Sample Tank

  • Sampling Pump, PVC Sampling Tubing, and Manual Shut-off Valves

  • Solenoid Valve for Pneumatic On/Off Control

  • GSM/GPRS Communication Gateway – BECKHOFF CX8XXX series datalogger and communication device with a web server for monitoring and data transmission to the Management Room.

  • Auxiliary components: Cooling fan, Circuit Breakers (Schneider), Surge Protection Device for cabinet protection, lighting, trunking, etc.

With this new technology application, sensors are placed directly in the pond to measure and monitor water quality 24/7 via smartphones. The system sends SMS alerts to managers’ phones when water parameters exceed allowable limits. This enables farmers to accurately monitor pond water, promptly implement adjustments to ensure optimal water conditions, thereby increasing productivity and reducing risks. Thanks to the stored data, farmers can observe the environmental parameters for the entire farming season for evaluation and lessons learned for subsequent crops.
